STRATFIELD SAYE and TURGIS, two parishes
Hypothetical Old English 'Straetfeld'='open land by the paved road', ie: the Roman road (Margary 4a) from Silchester to London, also known as The Devil's Highway. One manor was held by John de Stutevill' in 1244 (cf 13th century 'Stratfelde Stuteville') and later by Richard de Say (cf 1263 'Stratfeldsay'). The other, smaller one was held by the Turgys family from the late 13th century (cf early 13th century, 1287 'Petit Stratfeld, Stratfeud Turgis'). Both specifiers are Norman surnames; the first comes from the place name 'Sai' in Orne (Normandy); the second is a Frenchified form of the Scandinavian given name 'Thorgils'.
Stratfield Saye house is the seat of the Dukes of Wellington, hence the adjacent 'Wellington Monument' and 'Wellington Country Park.'

description
Strafield Say
The place is described in text Cobbett 1830

refce: Cobbett 1830
Set off for London [from Burghclere]. Went by Alderbridge, Crookham, ... Stratfield Say, Heckfield Heath, Eversley, Blackwater, ... This is, with trifling exceptions, a miserably poor country.
...
At Stratfield Say is that everlasting monument of English Wisdom Collective, the Heir Loom Estate of the 'greatest Captain of the Age!' In his peerage it is said, that it was wholly out of the power of the nation to reward his services fully; but that 'she did what she could!' Well, poor devil! And what could any body ask for more? It was well, however, that she gave what she did while she was drunk; for, if she had held her hand till now, I am half disposed to think, that her gifts would have been very small. ...
